HEART rescues and rehomes dogs and cats from a shelter near Jizobashi Station in Tokushima. Long term volunteers work about five days a week on animal care and shelter upkeep, and live for free in a shared volunteer house with futons, a kitchen, and laundry provided. Volunteers cover their own meals and must register for Japan's volunteer insurance (500 yen a year) plus personal travel insurance. A visa that permits work in Japan is required, as HEART cannot sponsor one.
